This 4-day private tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert and back offers a deeply enriching journey through Morocco’s most stunning landscapes, ancient villages, and cultural landmarks, making it a must for travelers seeking authenticity, adventure, and comfort in one itinerary. You’ll cross the dramatic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, explore the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Aït Benhaddou, and visit the cinematic town of Ouarzazate before continuing through the fragrant Valley of Roses and the towering Dades and Todra Gorges. The highlight is a sunset camel ride across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga, followed by an unforgettable night in a Berber desert camp with traditional music, dinner, and stargazing. The journey back includes visits to remote Berber villages, fossil museums in Erfoud, the lively souk of Rissani, and the palm-filled Draa Valley with its centuries-old kasbahs, including a stay in the historic village of Tamnougalt. With experienced drivers, comfortable accommodations, and authentic local encounters, this tour is ideal for those wanting to explore both Morocco’s rich heritage and natural wonders—while enjoying a seamless, fully guided experience from Marrakech to the Sahara and back.

DAY 1: TRAVEL FROM MARRAKECH TO AIT BENHADDOU KASBAH AND OUARZAZATE STUDIOS TOWARDS DADES VALLEY

Your private driver will pick you up in the morning from your riad or hotel in Marrakech to begin your journey toward the Moroccan desert. The tour starts with an unforgettable drive through the High Atlas Mountains, where you’ll cross the highest road pass in Morocco—Tizi n’Tichka, sitting at an altitude of 2,260 meters. The route offers changing landscapes, panoramic views, and picturesque Berber villages carved into the mountainsides, with several opportunities to stop for photos, scenic breaks, or a traditional mint tea. By around 12:30 p.m., you will arrive at the famous Kasbah of Aït Benhaddou, a 16th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site that has served as the filming location for many major movies such as Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and The Mummy. After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, you’ll take a guided walk of about 40 minutes through the narrow alleys of the kasbah, ending with a visit to a local Berber family for tea and cultural exchange.

The journey continues to Ouarzazate, also known as the Hollywood of Africa, where you’ll make a stop at the historic Taourirt Kasbah, once home to the Glaoui family, and optionally visit a film studio or cinema museum. From there, drive through the Skoura Oasis—dotted with ancient kasbahs and palm groves—and pass through the fragrant Valley of Roses, where you’ll visit a rose distillation cooperative (seasonal) and learn about how local women turn roses into beauty products. By late afternoon or early evening, you’ll reach the scenic Dades Gorges, where you’ll settle into your hotel, enjoy a delicious dinner, and relax for the night in the heart of the valley.

DAY 2: TRANSPORT FROM DADES GORGES TO ERG CHEBBI NEAR MERZOUGA AND CAMEL RIDE TO CAMP

After breakfast at the hotel, you’ll depart around 8:30 a.m. toward the Sahara. The first stop is the magnificent Todra Gorge, a spectacular canyon with towering 300-meter cliffs, nestled in a valley filled with date palms and Berber villages. You’ll have about 30 minutes to explore the gorge, walk along the river, and watch local rock climbers scale the cliffs. Afterward, the route continues through several authentic Berber towns, where you can stop for lunch at a local restaurant and try traditional dishes like tagine, couscous, and Berber omelets.

You’ll then head toward the desert, stopping in Erfoud, known for its fossils and ancient marine formations. Here, you can visit a fossil museum or workshop to see how fossils are extracted and crafted. Continuing through the Tafilalet oasis—one of Morocco’s largest palm groves—you’ll reach Rissani, home to a famous souk (market). If desired, you can stop to explore this bustling marketplace, known for its displays of dates, spices, silver jewelry, carpets, and traditional daggers.

In the late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Merzouga, where your camels will be waiting. From here, begin your sunset camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes, with their golden peaks rising as high as 150 meters. After about an hour of riding, you’ll reach your desert camp in the heart of the dunes. Here, you’ll be welcomed with tea, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, and spend the evening around a campfire with Berber music and drumming, before settling into your private nomadic-style tent under a blanket of stars.

DAY 3- MERZOUGA - NKOB - DRAA VALLEY :

Wake up early to watch the sunrise from atop the dunes—an awe-inspiring experience as the first light spreads across the endless sand. After riding camels back to Merzouga, you’ll have time to shower and enjoy breakfast at the desert inn. Then, your journey continues westward through the desert plateaus and stone landscapes toward the village of Tazzarine, passing remote areas that have preserved a traditional Berber way of life.

Your next stop is Nkob, the main village of the Aït Atta tribe, known for its fortified kasbahs and vast palm groves. Here, you’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and perhaps a short walk through the oasis. Afterward, continue into the beautiful and expansive Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley at over 1,100 kilometers, and one of its richest agricultural zones—especially famous for producing dates. The landscape is dotted with kasbahs, palm trees, and small farming communities.

As you approach Agdz, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Draa Valley,” you’ll stop to explore Kasbah Tamnougalt, one of the oldest and most atmospheric kasbahs in the region. Some parts are in ruins, while others are still inhabited, giving a sense of the area's layered history. You’ll spend the night in a traditional guesthouse nearby, surrounded by mudbrick walls, palm groves, and peaceful desert skies.

DAY 4 - DRAA VALLEY - OURZAZATTE-THE HIGH ATLAS - MARRAKECH:

On the final day, after breakfast, the return to Marrakech begins. You’ll first retrace your route through Agdz and pass once again through Ouarzazate, with optional time for a final visit to any missed landmarks or a quick stop at a local cooperative. The drive then continues through the High Atlas Mountains, offering more stunning landscapes and perhaps a final photo stop along the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Expect to arrive back in Marrakech around 3:30 p.m., where your driver will drop you off at your accommodation, marking the end of a once-in-a-lifetime desert experience that combines Morocco’s rich culture, natural beauty, and warm hospitality.  Thank you for contacting Travel Within Morocco as your reputable travel operator for desert tours from Marrakech.
